Recently at one of my gigs, a hired musician no showed our sound check. When they called, he made up various excuses about paid parking or call time vs down beat & said he’d be there later that evening. Although I DO feel this way sometimes, I typically try to account for these factors when accepting a gig.
Every gig taken has a cost. It’s our job to ask the questions, assess & decide if the pay is worth the cost. Early call times, soundcheck, time to learn necessary material & expenditures are all part of the cost of doing business. Whether it’s actual money, time or sweat equity; you need to take all factors into account BEFORE you quote a rate and/or take the gig. No showing sound check is RARELY acceptable & not a good look. Especially in the situation I outlined above.
In a world full of amateurs, be a professional.
